Recent Freehand Drawings

With these drawings, I tried experimenting with some old markers that have been sitting idle on my desk. Without any initial sketch, I drew intuitively. I started with the person, gesture, or expression, and the setting followed.

I would like to become more intentional with the subjects or the settings that I draw, but my goal right now is to just draw, instead of struggling with a more detailed piece that I may or may not have the skills (or time) to pull off.

I want to make my art hobby more approachable by taking a low stakes approach. Sometimes, the final product turns out quite nicely! I am quite fond of the drawings pictured above. They posted above my desk as mini posters for me to glance at while I study.

I try to incorporate dynamic linework/shapes into (most of) my art. It’s a stylistic choice; I like to accentuate the shapes found in the human body. It’s makes the drawing visually compelling. I want to carry forward this type of linework into my future still life and landscape drawings.

Here is a cute little drawing of an interaction I saw while walking downtown the other day. A woman and man had been talking to each other across the street. The man had then said something which made the woman to keel over with laughter. The guy looked simultaneously amused and exasperated. Later that day, I tried to redraw that interaction, and this was the result 🙂

Living in a city as large as Toronto has provided me with ample inspiration for my own art. My mind is filled with memories of the interesting people, landscapes and interactions I have seen during my walks.

On my strolls through the downtown core, I often take pictures of buildings to later use as references for architectural drawings. I am still yet to make use of the many architectural photos in my camera roll. It’s a bit daunting, honestly. Drawing buildings is not my strong suit. Hopefully, however, I will try my hand at it between my class assignments and post an architectural drawing here soon.
